Eating Out on a GLP-1: How to Order at Almost Any Restaurant

Restaurants used to be easy. On a GLP-1, they’re a small puzzle: portions are too big, the bread basket arrives at exactly the wrong moment, and the social rhythm doesn’t match your stomach’s new capacity. The good news is that the puzzle is solvable, and the same handful of rules works at almost any restaurant in any cuisine.

The One Rule: Protein First

If you eat the protein on your plate first, your meal is already eighty percent of the way to working. Protein is the most satiating macronutrient, and on a GLP-1 stomach you’ll be full long before you make it to the bread or the fries — which is exactly the point. Build every restaurant order around a clear protein anchor: grilled chicken, fish, steak, eggs, tofu, beans. Then add what you actually want of the rest in smaller amounts.

The Three Habits That Quietly Carry the Night

•       Order with a doggy bag in mind. GLP-1 portions are about a third of restaurant portions. Ask for the box at the start of the meal, not the end — it takes the pressure off finishing. Half goes home for tomorrow’s lunch.

•       Water before any drink. Water alongside any drink. Alcohol hits harder on a small, slow stomach. Water first reduces both the absorption spike and the next-day cost. A glass of water for every drink is the rule that holds nights together. While on a GLP-1, experts recommend capping at a maximum of one standard drink per day for women and two standard drinks per day for men due to serious risks such as pancreatitis.

•       Walk after. A ten-minute walk after a restaurant meal can be the difference between a comfortable evening and a 2 a.m. reflux wake-up. Even a slow loop around the parking lot counts.

Ordering by Cuisine

•       American / steakhouse. A small filet, grilled fish, or a chicken entrée with a side of vegetables or a small salad. Skip the bread basket or eat one piece. Skip the fries or split. Sauce on the side.

•       Italian. Anchor on a protein — grilled chicken or fish, veal piccata, a small meat-based antipasto — with a small portion of pasta or polenta. Skip the bread before the meal; you’ll need the room. A red sauce often sits better than a heavy cream sauce.

•       Mexican. Fajitas with grilled chicken or steak, beans, and a couple of tortillas — high protein, moderate carb, gentle on the stomach. Skip the heavy queso and the margaritas; both are GLP-1 nausea triggers.

•       Asian (Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Vietnamese). Steamed or grilled proteins (pho, banh mi, sushi, satay, stir-fry) with rice in portion. Skip fried appetizers and sweet, syrupy sauces. Plain white rice is often better tolerated than fried rice.

•       Breakfast/brunch. Eggs are your friend on a GLP-1 — two-egg omelets, scrambles with vegetables, or a small egg dish with a side of fruit. Skip the giant pancake stacks; they hit a slow stomach hard and crash you an hour later.

•       Fast casual (Chipotle, Cava, Sweetgreen). These are almost too easy. Double protein, a base of greens or grains, vegetables, no dressing or dressing on the side. The half-portion is the move — order a bowl, eat half, the other half is dinner.

What to Skip (Most Nights)

•       Fried appetizers. They sit hard on a slowed stomach.

•       Alcohol. They are wasted calories and offer no nutritional benefit.

•       Cream-heavy soups and sauces. Tomato-based and broth-based options are typically easier.

•       Dessert at the table. If you really want it, take it home and have a few bites the next afternoon. The same dessert at 10pm on a full slow stomach is a different experience.

What to Say to the People at Your Table

You owe no one an explanation for what you order. If asked, “I’m not super hungry tonight” or “saving room” covers it. The only person at the table who needs to feel okay about your plate is you. Eating out on a GLP-1 gets easier with practice, and a couple of repeat dinners build a quiet confidence that carries everywhere else.

Your First Step

Before your next dinner out, decide your protein anchor on the way to the restaurant — chicken, fish, steak, eggs, beans, tofu — and commit to ordering it. Then ask for the box when your meal arrives. That single move handles most of what makes restaurants tricky.
