Understanding GLP-1 Medications: What They Do, How They Feel, and What to Expect

If you’re considering a GLP-1 medication—or you just started one—you probably have questions. Maybe a lot of them. What does it actually do? What will the first few weeks feel like? What’s normal and what isn’t?

You’re not alone. These are the most common questions I hear, and they deserve honest, clear answers.

What GLP-1 Medications Actually Do

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1—a hormone your body naturally produces in the gut. It helps regulate appetite, digestion, and blood sugar. Medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and Mounjaro mimic this hormone and amplify its effects.

In practical terms, that means:

•       Appetite suppression—you’re genuinely less hungry

•       Slower digestion—food stays in your stomach longer, so you feel full with less

•       Improved insulin function—your body processes blood sugar more efficiently so it gets used as energy instead of storing it as fat

These effects work together to support weight loss and metabolic health. But the medication is a tool, not a magic switch. What you do alongside it matters enormously.

The Side Effects You’ll Hear About Most

Two side effects come up more than any others: nausea and constipation.

Nausea  often shows up in the first day or two after starting or increasing your dose. For most people, it improves as your body adjusts. Eating slowly, stopping before you feel stuffed, and avoiding greasy or fried foods can make a real difference. Overeating—even a little—tends to make nausea significantly worse.

Constipation happens because digestion slows down, food moves through your system more slowly, and most people are eating and drinking less than before. The fix isn’t complicated, but it does require attention: stay hydrated consistently throughout the day and keep your body moving.

Hydration Is Non-Negotiable

When you’re eating less, it’s surprisingly easy to drink less too—sometimes without even noticing. But adequate hydration is critical on GLP-1 medication. It supports digestion, reduces nausea, prevents constipation, and keeps your energy up.

Sipping water consistently throughout the day tends to work better than drinking large amounts at once, especially if nausea is an issue.

Movement Matters More Than You Think

You don’t need to train for a marathon. But regular, gentle movement—walking, stretching, light exercise—does more than burn calories. It stimulates your digestive system, supports muscle preservation, improves circulation, and helps stabilize your mood during a period of significant change.

Every Bite Counts—Literally

When your appetite is suppressed and you’re eating significantly less, the quality of what you eat becomes critical. Every meal is an opportunity to nourish your body or miss one.

Focus on nutrient-dense whole foods: lean proteins, vegetables, fruits, and fiber-rich options. And prioritize protein—rapid weight loss can lead to muscle loss if protein intake drops too low.

Everyone’s Experience Is Different

Some people breeze through the first few weeks with minimal side effects. Others experience fatigue, headaches, mood changes, or digestive issues that take time to resolve. Both experiences are normal.

The most important thing is to stay in communication with your healthcare provider. They can help assess what’s happening and adjust your plan as needed.

The Takeaway

GLP-1 medications are powerful—but they’re not a passive experience. The people who get the best results are the ones who actively support their body through the process: staying hydrated, moving regularly, eating intentionally, and paying attention to how they feel.

The medication handles appetite. Everything else is up to you.
