What to Eat on a GLP-1 When Nothing Sounds Good

This post is for health education purposes only and is not medical advice. Always consult your healthcare provider about your personal situation.

One of the most unexpected parts of starting a GLP-1 medication is this: the hunger disappears, and suddenly nothing sounds good to eat. You open the fridge, stare at it, close it, and walk away. You know you should eat something—but the thought of food feels almost repulsive.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common experiences people report on Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound—and it’s one of the least talked about. The medication is doing its job by suppressing appetite. But your body still needs fuel, and what you eat during this time matters more than ever.

Why Undereating on a GLP-1 Is a Real Risk

When appetite drops dramatically, many people end up eating far too little—sometimes only a few hundred calories a day. That might sound like a weight loss win, but it’s not. Severe undereating causes your body to break down muscle for energy, and muscle is the last thing you want to lose. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, which makes it harder to maintain weight loss later. You can also become deficient in essential vitamins and minerals, experience fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, and weakened immunity.

The goal on a GLP-1 isn’t to eat as little as possible. It’s to eat well with whatever appetite you have.

Protein First, Every Time

If there’s one rule to follow when appetite is low, it’s this: prioritize protein. Protein protects your muscle mass, keeps you feeling more stable between meals, and supports recovery. Most healthcare providers recommend that GLP-1 users aim for at least 60–80 grams of protein per day—which can feel like a lot when you barely want to eat at all.

The trick is to make every bite count. When you sit down to eat (or even just snack), lead with protein before anything else. If you can only eat a small amount, make sure protein is the first thing on the plate.

What to Eat When Nothing Appeals

When food feels unappealing, cold, mild, and soft foods tend to be the most tolerable. Think Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, smoothies, scrambled eggs, deli turkey rolled up, string cheese, or a protein shake. These are easy on the stomach, require minimal prep, and pack real nutrition into small amounts.

Some practical combinations that work well: Greek yogurt with berries and a drizzle of honey. A protein smoothie with banana, spinach, protein powder, and almond milk. Scrambled eggs with a slice of toast. Cottage cheese with fruit. A handful of nuts with a cheese stick. Canned tuna or chicken on crackers. Even bone broth with a side of deli meat counts—you’re getting protein and hydration in one sitting.

The key is to stop thinking in terms of “meals” and start thinking in terms of “nutrition opportunities.” Five or six small bites throughout the day can be more manageable—and more effective—than forcing three full meals.

Don’t Forget Hydration

When you’re eating less, you’re also getting less water from food—which means dehydration becomes a real concern, especially since GLP-1 medications can slow digestion. Sip water throughout the day. If plain water feels hard to get down, try herbal tea, water with lemon, or broth. Aim for at least 64 ounces daily, and more if you’re active.

When to Talk to Your Provider

Some appetite suppression is expected and normal on a GLP-1. But if you’re consistently eating under 800–1,000 calories a day, experiencing persistent nausea that prevents eating, losing hair, or feeling dizzy or extremely fatigued, it’s time to talk to your healthcare provider. A dose adjustment or different approach may be needed. This medication is supposed to help you—not leave you malnourished.

Your First Step

Today, focus on one thing: hit your protein. Even if you can only manage a Greek yogurt, a protein shake, and some deli turkey—that’s a solid start. You don’t need perfect meals. You need consistent nourishment in whatever form your body will accept right now.
